Price is the loudest thing in an insurance ad and the least useful thing to compare. What actually matters when your life is on the line is whether a company can pay a big claim and whether it treats people well when they file one. Below is a neutral, sourced snapshot of the carriers most Californians choose, followed by how to weigh them.
The snapshot
| Carrier | Financial strength (AM Best) |
California satisfaction (J.D. Power 2026) |
Often known for | Worth a look if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auto Club / AAA (Interinsurance Exchange) |
A+ Superior | Highest in California, two years running | Member service, bundling with AAA membership and roadside | You value service and already use AAA |
| State Farm | A+ Superior | Around the state average | Large local agent network, steady claims reputation | You want a local agent to sit across from |
| GEICO | A++ Superior | Above the state average | Competitive pricing, strong app and online service | You are comfortable managing a policy digitally |
| Progressive | A+ Superior | Near the state average | Usage-based Snapshot program, easy bundling | You are a low-mileage or careful driver open to tracking |
| Allstate | A+ Superior | Near the state average | Agent network, add-ons like accident forgiveness | You want optional extras and a local agent |
| Farmers | A Excellent | Near the state average | Customizable coverage, agent relationships | You want to tailor coverage with an agent |
| Mercury | A Excellent | Below the state average in 2026 | Low headline rates, strong California presence | Budget is the priority; weigh the service tradeoff |
| USAA (military families) |
A++ Superior | Consistently top-tier (rated separately) | Highly rated service and pricing for members | You are active duty, a veteran, or a military family |
How to actually compare carriers
A chart is a starting point, not an answer. When you get quotes, weigh five things in this order:
- Financial strength first. Insurance is a promise to pay later. An A rating or better from AM Best means the company can keep that promise on a large claim.
- Claims service second. The cheapest policy is expensive if a claim turns into a fight. Read how a carrier scores on claims satisfaction, and ask friends how their claims actually went.
- Coverage, not just price. Compare quotes at the same limits, including uninsured motorist and MedPay. A cheaper premium usually means less coverage, which you only discover after a crash. See our coverage types guide.
- How you like to be served. A local agent you can visit, or a slick app you can self-serve. Both are valid, so pick the one you will actually use.
- Price last. Compare only after the first four match. Then a lower price is a genuine win, not a hidden gap.
