California Auto Insurance Coverage Types, Explained

Your declarations page lists a dozen coverages in abbreviations no one ever explained. Here is the whole menu in plain English, sorted by what actually matters in California. Keep it next to your policy, and if any line does not match your life, that is the conversation to have with your agent this week.

Carry it Usually smart Depends on your situation

Bodily Injury Liability

Carry it

Pays other people's medical bills, lost income, and legal costs when a crash is your fault. It does nothing for your own injuries.

Who needs it: Everyone, and at limits well above California's 30/60/15 minimum if you own a home or have savings to protect.

Property Damage Liability

Carry it

Pays for the other driver's vehicle and property (a fence, a storefront, a light pole) when you are at fault. The California minimum is just $15,000, and a single new SUV can exceed that easily.

Who needs it: Everyone, at a limit that reflects the price of the cars around you.

Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist (UM / UIM)

Carry it

Pays for your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance, flees, or does not carry enough to cover you. With about one in six California drivers uninsured, this is often the only coverage that pays after a serious crash.

Who needs it: Every California driver. It is inexpensive and it is the coverage we most often wish clients had. Read why.

Collision

Usually smart

Repairs or replaces your own car after a crash with another vehicle or object, no matter who was at fault, minus your deductible.

Who needs it: Anyone with a financed or leased car (your lender requires it), or a paid-off car you could not comfortably replace out of pocket.

Comprehensive

Usually smart

Covers damage to your car that is not a collision: theft, vandalism, fire, flooding, falling branches, animals, and glass. This is the coverage that answers when a wildfire or flood season turns bad.

Who needs it: Anyone in wildfire, flood, or vehicle-theft country, and anyone with a newer or financed car.

Medical Payments (MedPay)

Usually smart

Pays medical and, in the worst cases, funeral expenses for you and your passengers after a crash, no matter who caused it and without waiting for a settlement. It stacks on top of health insurance to absorb deductibles and copays.

Who needs it: Families who want bills handled fast, anyone who carries passengers, and anyone with a high-deductible health plan.

Rental Reimbursement

Usually smart

Pays for a loaner while your car is in the shop after a covered claim. A few dollars a month spares you the choice between an unsafe car and an expensive rental.

Who needs it: Single-vehicle households, and anyone who cannot easily go a week without a car.

Roadside Assistance & Towing

Depends

Covers towing, jump starts, lockouts, flat tires, and fuel delivery. Useful, but check whether you already have it through a manufacturer app, a credit card, or an auto club before you pay twice.

Who needs it: Anyone without another roadside plan, especially long commuters and older vehicles.

Gap Insurance

Depends

If your financed car is totaled, gap pays the difference between what you still owe and what the car was worth. Cars lose value faster than loans shrink, so that difference can be thousands.

Who needs it: Anyone who financed with little money down, a long loan term, or a fast-depreciating vehicle.

Rideshare & Business Use

Depends

A personal policy can deny a claim that happens while you are driving for Uber, Lyft, or deliveries. A rideshare endorsement closes that gap.

Who needs it: Anyone who drives for a rideshare or delivery app, even occasionally.

Personal Umbrella Policy

Usually smart

Sits on top of your auto and home coverage and adds a large layer of liability protection, often a million dollars or more, for a modest premium. It is what stands between a serious at-fault crash and everything you own.

Who needs it: Homeowners, families with savings, and any household with a new teen driver.
